  1. How should I apply for a job at Rhythm & Hues?

Most job applicants should send a resume and cover letter to our Recruiting Department at 5404 Jandy Place, Los Angeles, CA, 90066.

Please make sure that adequate contact information is listed and that the resume and letter is printed on paper that is easy to photocopy.

If you are a software programmer, please e-mail your resume to recruitment@rhythm.com in either text-only or html format. Software interns should e-mail your resume to sw-appsintern@rhythm.com in either text-only or html format.

If you are a digital artist, you must also send a demo reel of your work, preferably with a break-down of what is on the demo reel and what you were responsible for. The preferred format for demo reels is 1/2" VHS. Please make sure your demo reel is labeled with your contact information.

If you are a traditional artist, you should send samples of your artwork. Please do not send originals - prints, photocopies, or slides are fine. Standard 8.5 x 11 is great.

  2. Why won't you look at CD-roms, websites, image attachments, or floppy disks?

Time. We receive literally thousands of applications a year. Popping in a 1/2" VHS tape or looking through a normal portfolio is very efficient compared to waiting for websites to load, searching for various appropriate hardware or software applications, or dealing with unintended viruses. Please be aware that your computing environment may be quite different from ours.

  3. When can I expect a response from you?

You should receive a postcard within a month acknowledging receipt of your submission. Unfortunately, because of the volume of applications, we are unable to provide specific feed-back on your demo reel or portfolio. If we are actively hiring and are interested in your application, we will contact you by phone or e-mail.

  4. Can I get my demo reel or portfolio back from you?

Again, because of the volume of submissions, we do not automatically return demo reels or portfolios. Also, we do review prior submissions when we are actively hiring, so it is to your advantage if your demo reel is still in our archives and that it is relatively up-to-date. However, if you send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, we will endeavor to return your demo reel or portfolio.

  5. If I don't get hired this time, should I try again?

There is no problem with trying again. We have had people who applied several times before being hired. Timing is everything in this industry, or, at least it's a lot. However, you should wait at least six months or until you have significant amounts of improved work for your demo reel. Monthly "reminders" are not constructive. But if your contact information changes, please don't hesitate to send us a brief note indicating your new information so that we can update our database and find you in the future.

  6. How long will you keep my application in your archives?

    At least two years.

  7. What schools do you recommend for digital artists?

It does not matter what school you go to as long as you graduate with an outstanding demo reel, demonstrably strong technical aptitude, and the ability to continue learning.

Our digital artists are alumni of such places as Texas A&M, Pratt Institute, CalArts, Cornell, School of Visual Arts, Ohio State, Ringling School of Art and Design, Cornell, Ecole Cantonale d'Art, Xavier University, UCLA, Georgia Tech, William Paterson, London School of Economics, Arts Academy Utrecht, University of the Arts, Clemson, Sheridan, Art Center, Harvard, Supinfocom, Tama Art University, Columbia, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Caltech, Boston University, Rochester Institute of Technology, UC-Berkeley, and many more.

Please see our Computer Graphics Schools page for a complete listing.

  8. Would you even hire a student straight out of school?

Yes, though much less frequently than we used to. The professional, experienced labor pool is much larger in California now than it was in the early 1990's.

  9. Do you hire for staff or free-lance?

We hire for both. It depends on the position and the current economic and market conditions. For much of the 1990's, our employees were nearly 100% staff. Nowadays, our total labor pool can consist of as much as one-third free-lance.

  10. What other positions besides digital artists are there at Rhythm & Hues?
