  1. What areas of specialties do you hire for?

Our main areas of specialization are matchmoving, character animation, modeling, texture painting, lighting, effects animation, and compositing.

  2. Does Rhythm & Hues hire digital artists who work in more than one specialty?

While Rhythm & Hues is fairly compartmentalized, it is possible, that you will find yourself performing one task, such as modeling, for several jobs, and then switching to another task, such as animation, for another job. There are currently a small number of digital artists at Rhythm & Hues who are doing this successfully. Usually, however, we seek digital artists whose work is more specialized.

A notable exception to this, however, is our commercial Black Box division where generalists are the norm.

  3. How technical does a Rhythm & Hues digital artist have to be?

Rhythm & Hues does not usually require a technical background, however, it has proven helpful in learning state-of-the-art software that is constantly evolving, as well as creating effects that have never been done before. The ideal candidate is someone with a good aesthetic eye and excellent analytical problem solving skills, not to mention good communication and team-working skills.

  4. Does that mean that Rhythm & Hues won't hire me if I have no UNIX experience?

There are a couple of digital artist positions at Rhythm & Hues where UNIX experience is not essential. Some examples are 3D digital artists in the commercial Black Box division and character animators. Black Box artists primarily use Lightwave running on Windows NT and Macintosh platforms. Character animators with strong traditional backgrounds are expected to learn basic UNIX once they arrive. Of course, the more you know to begin with, the better.

  5. What school should I go to?

It does not matter what school you go to as long as you have an outstanding demo reel and demonstrably strong technical aptitude. The only real educational requirement is that you understand what an outstanding demo reel and demonstrably strong technical aptitude is, and that you have learned how to learn.

  6. What else does Rhythm & Hues look for?

Rhythm & Hues has certain values as a company, so we try to look for those same qualities in each individual that we hire. Honesty, integrity and fairness are essential in our environment. Creativity and commitment to quality and life-long learning are also important characteristics. Every employee is expected to value and respect the people they are working with as well as the work environment itself. Overall, this creates a creative and friendly, yet professional atmosphere that many say is unique to Rhythm & Hues.
